cPanel Email Filtering

Overview

Spam email refers to unsolicited and undesirable bulk messages sent to a wide-ranging recipient list.

Typically, spam is disseminated in large quantities by botnets, which are networks of compromised computers.

Stopping spam email can be challenging, as it often originates from botnets. Consequently, identifying and halting the original spammer can prove difficult.

Nevertheless, spam emails can be managed effectively by establishing appropriate filtering rules through the cPanel interface.

Email Filters

Email filters utilize specified criteria to determine the handling of email messages. Emails may be discarded, redirected to an alternative address, organized into folders, or subjected to other actions.

The Global Email Filters interface (cPanel >> Home >> Email >> Global Email Filters) — Global email filters impact all email addresses associated with the cPanel account.

The Email Filters interface (cPanel >> Home >> Email >> Email Filters) — User-level filters specifically affect designated email addresses within the cPanel account.

SpamAssassin

Another effective tool for combating spam that can be utilized within your cPanel is SpamAssassin.

This tool employs various tests and criteria to detect and block spam.

SpamAssassin analyzes the content of each message prior to its arrival in your inbox, looking for words, phrases, and other characteristics commonly associated with spam. After the analysis, each message is assigned a score — the higher the score, the greater the likelihood that it is spam.

By default, messages with a spam score of “5” or above will be deleted.

However, you have the option to select a different threshold if preferred.
